Healing Is Not Erasing the Past: Why You're Still Carrying Old Weight

Updated: Jan 20

Healing isn't about pretending the past didn't happen. It's about transforming how we carry our memories, pain, and experiences. It's a journey where the weight of our history no longer controls us. If you are in Naranja, FL, and are feeling weighed down by your past, know this: you don't have to face it alone. The "Break Free: Habits to Hope" program from Time Don youth charity is here to guide you on your healing journey.

The Weight of Unhealed Pain

A lot of us walk around with unhealed wounds. These can be experiences of trauma, loss, or simply feelings we never had the space to process. Society often tells us to "be strong," and as a result, many of us suppress our feelings. This suppression leads to carrying what I like to call "old weight."

When you are expected to simply survive instead of feeling, you lose the opportunity to heal. Think about it – how many times have you caught yourself feeling really sad, angry, or confused without fully knowing why? That’s old weight talking.

Unpacking Our Emotional Reactions

Unhealed pain shows up in different forms: emotional reactions, overthinking, people-pleasing, self-doubt, and even fear of abandonment. This baggage makes it difficult to make decisions that are best for you. Instead of being authentic, you find yourself stuck in cycles of trying to please others or fighting against your emotional impulses.

Being stuck in these patterns means you are just repeating past versions of yourself. Remember, healing doesn't just mean pushing those feelings down. It's about acknowledging them and allowing space for growth.

Learning to Let Go: Setting the Weight Down

Healing isn't about forgetting the past; it’s about learning how to set the weight down. When we embrace healing, we start to recognize that the memories don’t define us. Instead, they inform us. Psalm 147:3 states, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." This means recognizing our pain, inviting God into our struggles, and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable.

In this journey, real healing comes from telling the truth about ourselves – gently, honestly, and without shame. It’s about recognizing the stories we carry and rewriting them. The act of release is fundamental to this process, which leads us away from denial and toward confession and accountability. As Isaiah 43:18-19 says, "Forget the former things… I am doing a new thing."

The Power of Faith in Healing

For those of us who have faith, embracing our healing journey can also mean relying on God’s promises. The very act of breaking free from old weight is a declaration that we trust in His plan for us. When we learn to release the past, we make room for new opportunities, relationships, and growth.

Faith can guide us to forgive ourselves and others and helps us understand that our past does not dictate our future. Think of it as planting seeds in a garden; the past is the soil, but it doesn’t define what will grow there.
